REPORT ON FLOOD 2004

Netrakona district is one of the flood prune zone in the greater Mymensingh. It is constitute with ten upazillas. Madan. Mohonganj, Khaliazuri and the part of Atpara and Kendua upazilas are the most lowland. The characteristics of those upzillas are submerged under water about 3-4 months naturally in every year. Flood is common phenomena for those area. During last 4 years the area was not facing such acute problem by flood. This year as usual it has been raining since last 10 days without any interval. Still it was acceptable until 19 th of July. Just after 12 A.M suddenly it had started tidal wave and water is just blubbering. In average 90% of the houses in those areas are floating on the water.
We have also collected information from our project beneficiaries through home visit and interviewed the community affected people. According to the collected report the following information has been found.
1. Road communication from Netrakona to Mohonganj, Madan, Atpara and Kendua closed.
2. Electricity and mobile phone line is cut as well.
3. Market places in every union are approximately 90% under water.
4.Each and every house is under water. 99% of those houses will be damaged.
5. Most of the children are suffering by fever and coughing, water borne diseases.
6. No sanitation system at all. Water pumps are under water so water crisis is acute.
7. It is a big problem of snake in Mohonganj and one union in Kendua.
8.Poor or rich those who have little stock of rice are not possible to cook because of place.
9. Ducks, chickens and goats are most of the areas we have found dying or selling with very little price

10.There is big crisis of fodder, medicine and shelter for livestocks.Cows are in same condition. Flood effected people are asking help for their animals fodder, medicine and staying place.
11. Purbadhala embankment dam has been broken in its two area ie Ladirkanda and Natorkona.
12. 100% planted seedbeds for the next cultivation has been destroyed. Still all are under water and it will create big crisis for the next harvest.
