Activities at a glimpse:
* Human Rights and legal support
* Promoting gender and women issues
* Organizing cultural events
*Publication and Networking
Since 1986, SUS provides services for the socio-economic development
of the people in Netrakona through different need-based activities.
But field experience has shown us, that sustainable development
can only be guaranteed if the people are able to access services
that are provided by the government. SUS was developed itself
as a response to the needs of the local community. The Bangladeshi
culture continues to create barriers against women benefiting
from the new legal rights and services accorded to them. Thus,
we undertake different steps to inform women and raise awareness
about their civil rights. Our program now provides group members
with information on Muslim Family Law, Fundamental Rights
from the constitution which commensurate with the universal
"Declaration of Human Rights", inheritance law and
land law.
Awareness Raising
People need to be organized and made aware about their political,
economic and social rights. We operate our Advocacy and Publication
Cell since January 1997 quarterly publicize the monthly magazine
'Somoyer Kotha' as the voice of the beneficiaries. A bi-monthly
magazine called Kishoreeder Kotha (at present 'Kaishore')
is published as a voice of the neglected and ignored adolescents
since 1998. Our Cell started conducting different awareness
raising activities on human rights and legal support, gender
and women issues, culture and information from 2001 on. The
SUS Cultural Team was formed for social mobilization. In Purbadhala
Upazilla, we work in collaboration with Ain O Salish Kendra,
Dhaka, on gender and social justice through popular theatre
groups at field level. This is accompanied by advocacy work
for the oppressed poor. We counsel different people's organizations
at field level including Manobadhikar Sangrakkon Parishad
(MSP), Manobadhikar Natya Parishad (MNP), female UP members
forum, child forum, journalist forum, teachers forum and lawyer
forum. Besides this, SUS offers trainings on gender, family
law, child rights and promotes issue-based drama performances
with a view to establish equal rights for men and women. Recently,
HRLS started a project named "Initiative for a just and
equitable society".
Gender
We emphasizes
the need to transform gender relations by promoting gender
equity in access and control over resources and household
decision-making.
